In icy, wintry Montreal where's a soul to go for comfort, confession and salvation? As The Scandelles' Sasha Van Bon Bon and Kitty Neptune reveal, the strip clubs of Montreal in the '90s were in as high demand as those more sanctified places of refuge. From the iconic feature dancer, to the lap dance confessional, Neon Nightz explores the human side to the world of exotic dancing and uncovers some surprising revelations.
Neon Nightz was born in 2002 at Will Munro's notorious art fete Vazaleen and has since been developed through a series of workshops at Buddies In Bad Times Theatre, most recently as part of Buddies' ART & SEX Series in 2007. September 2009 marks the world premiere of the full-scale production of Neon Nightz as award winning designer Andy Moro transforms Buddies' mainspace into a hazy neon '90s Montreal strip club complete with two 16 foot tall brass stripper poles and a mirrored 'gynecology row' for those brave souls who want to get a more intimate view.
The Broken Social Scene of conceptual cabaret, The Scandelles' Kitty Neptune and Sasha Van Bon Bon have collected an impressive roster of collaborators and generated a prolific body of work in under a decade. From environmental burlesque acts to large-scale theatre works, The Scandelles have created a repertoire of provocative and wildly entertaining shows including Under the Mink, Who's Your Dada?, Les Demimondes and Give A Piece of Ass a Chance (a short art porn film created in collaboration with Bruce LaBruce). The Scandelles' work has been seen everywhere from seedy sex clubs to international film festivals. Dancer/choreographer Kitty Neptune and nationally published sex columnist Sasha Van Bon Bon were featured performers and co-creators of ArtHouse Cabaret (Buddies' 2007 Dora-award winning production). After ten years at the helm of Buddies In Bad Times Theatre, former Artistic Director and Dora Award-winner David Oiye returns to the Buddies' mainstage to direct Toronto's premiere burlesque troupe in the stunning confessional cabaret, Neon Nightz.
