The Cabaret Company presents HAPPY: A VERY GAY LITTLE MUSICAL by Sky Gilbert exploring the very delicate balancing act that is modern gay domestic life. Sky Gilbert's first musical in over 15 years, HAPPY: A VERY GAY LITTLE MUSICAL is a fierce and entertaining battle between irony and hypocrisy as it dissects the sometimes happy, sometimes rocky life of a gay couple that also happens to write songs together.
Bob and Dave have been happily married for five years. Dave, a composer, is tall, dark, straight acting, cool, calm and collected. Bob, his lyricist, is tall, dark, not so straight acting, and not very collected at all. They are hard at work on a new musical (called Happy!) and very grateful for the help offered by their best friend, script doctor (and committed alcoholic) Sue. Everything is just peachy keen until there is a knock on the door. A very handsome young man stands there. He says he has come to deliver The Evening Star. But to everyone's surprise, he delivers a whole lot more!
HAPPY: A VERY GAY LITTLE MUSICAL stars Jason Cadieux (Sky Gilbert's Crack, Lilies (Genie nomination), Train 48) as Bob, David Tomlinson (Sky Gilbert's Rope Enough, Bethany's Gate, Train 48) as Dave, Sharron Matthews (Sharron's Party!, Les Misérables, Beauty and the Beast, Outrageous and her recent star turn as the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz) as Sue, and newcomer singer/songwriter Jamieson Eakin (known to some as the sexiest boy to ever work the Buddies ticket booth) as "The Boy At The Door With A Big Surprise!"
HAPPY: A VERY GAY LITTLE MUSICAL is Sky Gilbert's welcome return into the musical comedy genre since Suzie Goo: Private Secretary in 1991. Sky Gilbert is a professor, drag performer and award-winning writer. Although primarily a playwright, Gilbert has also published novels, poetry, and a memoir. He currently holds the University Research Chair in Creative Writing and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph.
Micah Barnes, a veteran of the Queen St. West music scene, composed the music for HAPPY: A VERY GAY LITTLE MUSICAL. Micah acted in and wrote a song for Sky Gilbert's first gay play Lana Turner Has Collapsed! in 1980 and wrote the music for two other Sky Gilbert musicals: An Evening and Marilyn Monroe is Alive and Well and Living in Joe's Brain, both in 1981-82. HAPPY: A VERY GAY LITTLE MUSICAL marks the first collaboration between Gilbert and Barnes in over 25 years!
This production has been made possible by funds from The Toronto Arts Council and The Ontario Arts Council.
